A Bit of History:
Portable reliquaries have allowed many cultures to carry sacred space since ancient times. Pocket altars, also known as pocket shrines or portable oratories, originated as a Catholic tool for priests to celebrate Mass in locations without consecrated altars. They evolved into the versions we see today in the 19th century, serving as spiritual companions during pilgrimages. Soldiers in WWI and WWII crafted them from bullet casings. Today, pocket altars are embraced by various spiritualities, blending traditional and contemporary elements to connect self to spirit.
