"Rebels in the Wild: The Equality Colony and the Taming of American Capitalism" uncovers the forgotten yet significant narrative of a radical socialist experiment in the Pacific Northwest during the early 20th century. Through letters, diaries, memoirs, newspaper reports, and court records, this book chronicles the lives of the Equality Colony in Skagit County, Washington, and the diverse individuals who contributed to its creation.

Despite their differences, these individuals shared a belief that capitalism was on the brink of collapse. This story highlights the ongoing struggle for human dignity and the quest for better societal organization. Although the Equality Colony ultimately failed, its legacy foreshadowed the emergence of a social welfare state and a collective agreement on the role of government in promoting the common good.

About the Author:
Robert Burns, a Stanwood native, earned his journalism degree from the University of Washington in 1977. With a 45-year career at the Associated Press, he reported on major events including Wall Street, the White House, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also served as president of the Pentagon Press Association for ten years. Robert and his wife, Liz, reside in Virginia and have two grown children.
