Summer of Architecture: Bluff Heights Lost Railway Tour

Join us for a guided walking tour to uncover the hidden history of Bluff Heights, followed by a delightful picnic lunch in Bixby Park! 🥪

This informative, docent-led tour will delve into the early human history of Bluff Heights, starting with the native Tongva tribes and moving through the early 20th century growth of Long Beach.

Tour Highlights:

• Starting Point: Corto Place
• Route: Stroll along Broadway (formerly Railway Street) from Redondo to Junipero, highlighting local historical landmarks.
• Lost Railway: Discover fascinating facts about the Pacific Electric Railway, once the most sophisticated electric railway system in the world over a century ago.
• Historic Sites: Visit the interpretive panel at JugBand to see the Pacific Electric Railway map and learn about the Bungalow Grocery and other historic buildings along Broadway.
• Architecture: Explore the Lowena Drive historic district and its unique Chateauesque architecture.
• Ending: Enjoy refreshments and a light picnic social at Bixby Park's Saturday farmers’ market.

Did You Know? Long Beach was once part of the most sophisticated electric railway system ever built: The Pacific Electric. “Railway Street,” now known as “Broadway,” was one of the first railway spurs after the Pacific Electric arrived in Long Beach from Los Angeles on July 4th, 1902.
