Thundercat released his new album It Is What It Is on Brainfeeder Records on April 3, 2020. This album, produced by Flying Lotus and Thundercat, features contributions from artists like Ty Dolla $ign, Childish Gambino, and Kamasi Washington.

It Is What It Is follows his acclaimed third album Drunk (2017), marking his evolution from virtuoso bassist to a prominent star. Thundercat describes this album as a reflection on love, loss, and life's complexities.

The passing of his friend Mac Miller in September 2018 deeply influenced the creation of this album. Thundercat emphasizes the importance of humor in his life, stating, "If you can't laugh at this stuff you might as well not be here." He collaborates with comedians like Zack Fox and counts others like Dave Chappelle among his friends.

Thundercat is a key figure in the Brainfeeder label, with a discography that includes The Golden Age of Apocalypse (2011) and Apocalypse (2013). He played a significant role in Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly, winning a Grammy for his collaboration on the track 'These Walls'. His latest album earned him the Grammy Award for Progressive R&B Album.
