Witkacy: Paintings—Drawings—Graphics and Archives

This remarkable exhibition marks the third permanent installment at the Central Pomerania Museum in Słupsk, showcasing the largest collection of works by the renowned Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. It stands as the only dedicated monographic exhibition of Witkacy's art in Poland. 🎨

The exhibition beautifully exhibits a variety of works from all phases of the artist's career, particularly highlighting the pastel portraits created through his one-man Portrait Company "S. I. Witkiewicz" from 1925 to 1939. The layout of the exhibition artfully intertwines archives and books with artistic creations, ensuring a cohesive experience rather than standalone sections. Over 135 paintings, drawings, graphic pieces, manuscripts, typescripts, correspondence, and personally dedicated books are on display.

The exhibition is organized into two captivating sections:

  • Part One: Showcases the evolution of Witkacy's art through various themes including: Zakopane, First Journeys and Experiences, In Russia, Among the Formists, In the World of Pure Form, The Year 1924, and The Portrait Company "S. I. Witkiewicz".
  • Part Two: Focuses on previous private collections that contributed to the Slupsk museum's impressive holdings, featuring collections from Włodzimierz Nawrocki, Jan and Janina Leszczyński, Modesta Zwolińska, the Głogowski family, and Teodor Białynicki-Birula.

Additionally, the exhibition addresses conservation issues, allowing visitors to observe practical examples, such as a glass pane with pastel flecks next to an original portrait. Accompanying films provide insights into the history of the Słupsk collection, and a special bilingual newspaper titled Witkacy elaborates on the exhibition’s various segments. At interactive multimedia stations, guests can explore portraits based on selected criteria—such as creation year or materials utilized—and witness the evolution of the colors used in Witkacy's artwork over time. The glass-paneled storeroom provides a glimpse into sections of the collection rarely seen by the public!
