Son Rompe Pera — Höjden stage, Way Out West

Few contemporary artists have done more to drag cumbia headfirst into the present than Son Rompe Pera. Raised on the outskirts of Mexico City in a family where marimba music had been passed down through generations, the Gama brothers grew up performing traditional songs alongside their father long before discovering punk, ska, psychobilly and garage rock as teenagers. Today, those worlds collide wildly in Son Rompe Pera’s music. The marimba remains at the center of everything they do, but in their hands the historic folk instrument becomes raw, distorted and unpredictable. The 2023 album “Chimborazo”, recorded in Bogotá, expanded their sound even further with collaborators, Andean textures and an even wilder sense of experimentation, while a new album is expected later this summer. But as explosive as the records are, it is Son Rompe Pera’s live reputation that has turned them into one of the most talked about acts in the international cumbia scene — transforming folkloric dance music into sweat-soaked mosh pits and euphoric collective release. This August, Way Out West gets exactly that when Son Rompe Pera arrive in Gothenburg.
