Ambient music and Resonance rediscovered: In conversation with Morioka Yumiko and Nick Luscombe
Join renowned pianist and composer Morioka Yumiko and celebrated sound artist and broadcaster Nick Luscombe for a captivating conversation about the enduring charm of kankyō ongaku (環境音楽) — Japan’s ambient music genre. Dive into the rediscovery of Morioka's influential 1987 album Resonance.
In this engaging dialogue, they will reflect on:
- The origins of Resonance: Discover how this once lesser-known release has transformed into an internationally acclaimed masterpiece.
- Kankyō Ongaku: Understand the essence of this genre, which interacts with everyday life, architecture, and its environment rather than being merely a spectacle.
The discussion will be accompanied by a selection of recordings from Resonance and a new collaborative project, Music for Rest Rooms, featuring Morioka, Luscombe, and Japan-based sound artist James Greer.
🎤 Special Performance: On July 14, all three artists will take to the stage at the Elgar Room, Royal Albert Hall, marking the first live performance of music from Resonance outside Asia.
