About the event

🌊 Join Us for a Fascinating Seminar! 🌊
Dive into the world of Allan Sekula (1951–2013), a remarkable anti-capitalist artist, photographer, filmmaker, and theorist, in our 'Marxism in Culture' seminar! 🔍

Featured Speakers:

  • Gail Day: Professor of Art History and Critical Theory at University of Leeds, author of Dialectical Passions: Negation in Postwar Art Theory (shortlisted for the Isaac and Tamara Deutscher Prize).
  • Steve Edwards: Manton Professor of British Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art, author of The Making of English Photography and editor for the Historical Materialism series.
  • Alex Fletcher: Lecturer at Kingston School of Art, specializing in modern art history and theory, film, and digital culture.
  • Stephanie Schwartz: Associate Professor at UCL, focusing on photography’s histories with works like WALKER EVANS: POLITICS.

🔖 About the Seminar:
We’ll be discussing the newly shortlisted monograph Amphibious Realities: The Documentary Poetics of Allan Sekula (Verso, 2025), which combines striking images and insightful essays. Sekula’s work captivatingly examines the 'imaginary and material geographies of advanced capitalism,' exploring how his radical documentary intertwines aesthetics and politics.
