About the event

Join us for "Coffee & Conversation", a film theory workshop and discussion circle where Black women and femmes explore the life, work, and cultural impact of Black womanhood on screen.
On Thursday July 9th we're diving into the story of the iconic Bessie Smith as told through the film "BESSIE"!
This is not a screening...
Led by Dr. Philana Payton, UC Irvine, this workshop will focus on Bessie Smith's on and off stage personas including her relationship to her sexuality, and the impact she has had on Black Feminist studies.
This is not a screening, it's an opportunity to dive deeper into the power of storytelling. Through guided conversation, multimedia clips, and creative reflection, participants engage in open dialogue around the intersections of gender, race, class, and identity in Hollywood Cinema history.
