About the event

This class offers a brief introduction to the history of Hoodoo and conjure, with a focus on New Orleans-style practices. We’ll explore how African, Indigenous, and European traditions came together to form a powerful system of folk magic in the American South, particularly in New Orleans Hoodoo. Participants will learn about the role of rootwork, common spiritual tools, and the purpose of mojo and gris-gris bags in Hoodoo. Each person will create their own gris-gris bag for luck and protection, learning how to prepare, dress, and carry it properly. We will also explore the spirit and folklore of High John the Conqueror, a symbol of strength, resilience, and spiritual power.
