About the event

Luxembourgish and Swiss actress Marie Jung presents a dramatic reading of the novella Fräulein Else by Arthur Schnitzler, one of the key authors of the Viennese Modernist movement. This extraordinary text from 1924, written in the form of a stream of consciousness, is one of the most radical psychological portraits of its time and retains its intense impact to this day.

At the center of the story is young Else, who tries to save her father from a public scandal. The condition she must accept, however, strikes at the very core of her dignity. What appears externally as a social situation unfolds internally as a dramatic stream of thoughts, feelings, and images, where reality and dream intertwine. Between the desire to escape and growing helplessness, an internal conflict develops, building toward a tragic climax.

At the intersection of literature and theatre, Marie Jung creates an intimate, intense space in which language and voice carry the full tension of the text. The reading explores themes of power, dependency, social hypocrisy, and the objectification of the female body, highlighting their disturbing relevance today.

Marie Jung (*1985, Luxembourg) studied acting at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna and has performed at Theater Basel, the Münchner Kammerspiele, and the Thalia Theater Hamburg. She now works as a freelance theatre and film actress.

The event is presented in collaboration with the Embassy of Luxembourg in Prague.

In German only.
