EMPIRE, EXILE, AND LITERATURE: ZABEL YESSAYAN AND YERVANT ODIAN
Join us for "Exploring Empire, Exile, and Literature: A Deep Dive into Yessayan and Odian" presented by Dr. Nanor Kebranian at CAIA, 105a Mill Hill Road, London, W3 8JF on February 5th (Thursday) at 19:00.
๐๏ธ Entrance is free! Light refreshments will be provided.
This engaging presentation delves into the intertwined yet distinct literary trajectories of two remarkable Armenian authors, Zabel Yessayan and Yervant Odian, during the late Ottoman Empire. Both writers navigated the chaos of collapse, violence, and displacement, but did so from uniquely different political and stylistic perspectives. โ๏ธ
Yessayan's humanist realism and her feminist approach to trauma and testimony contrast with Odian's sharp satire and cosmopolitan irony, offering diverse literary responses to imperial decline and widespread violence. This discourse situates their works within the expansive realms of Armenian, Ottoman, and transnational literature, examining how both forced and voluntary exile influenced narrative voice, genre, and historical memory at the empire's twilight.
