🧠 Introduction to Machine Learning in Medicine

Curious about how artificial intelligence is actually used in real-world healthcare settings? This hands-on workshop is designed to give you practical exposure to machine learning in medicine β€” no prior experience needed!

πŸ”¬ What the Workshop Covers

Participants will dive into a medical image segmentation task, guided step by step through the process of training a machine learning model. Using a ready-made Google Colab notebook, you'll be able to run code yourself and experiment directly β€” no setup required.

Key questions explored during the session:

  • πŸ€– How does a model actually learn?
  • πŸ₯ What do real medical datasets look like?
  • πŸš€ How can you begin exploring this field independently?

πŸ“‹ Workshop Structure

  • Brief introduction to machine learning concepts in healthcare
  • Guided hands-on exercise using a pre-built notebook to train a simple model together
  • Open Q&A, discussion, and peer exchange

πŸ‘₯ Who Should Attend?

This workshop welcomes anyone with an interest in AI and healthcare. No background in programming, machine learning, or medicine is required β€” just curiosity and a willingness to try something new!

πŸŽ“ About the Workshop Leader

The session is led by Abdul Basit Banbhan, who holds both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Artificial Intelligence from JKU.

His background includes:

  • πŸ” A one-year research internship at the IAEA, focused on satellite imagery analysis related to nuclear facilities
  • πŸ‡³πŸ‡± A year working at ASML in the Netherlands
  • 🧬 A Master's specialisation in AI applications in the life sciences
  • πŸ“š Several years of teaching assistant experience in life science courses, with current lecturing duties at JKU
  • πŸ’Ό Active work as an AI consultant, developing AI agents for international companies

🌟 Special Guest

We're thrilled to welcome Prof. Anita Rieder, Vice Rector of the Medical University of Vienna, who will be present at the opening of the workshop!

πŸ’‘ Come try it out for yourself and get your first real glimpse into working with AI in healthcare!
