Is It Really a Paradox? A Mixed-Methods, Within-Country Analysis of the Gender Gap in STEM Education

About the event

Join us for an insightful seminar with Yariv Feniger, an associate professor in the Department of Education at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. This presentation tackles the intriguing paradox of decreasing women's representation in scientific and technical fields as societal affluence increases.

Through a unique lens of the Israeli educational system, Feniger explores the social psychological and organizational mechanisms driving variations in gender demographics in physics and computing subjects across different school sectors. 📚✨

Utilizing in-depth interviews and original surveys, this study compares the attitudes and aspirations of ninth graders from two starkly different state school sectors:

  • The socioeconomically marginalized Arab Palestinian minority
  • The Jewish secular majority

Results highlight significant differences in curricular preferences and motivations, revealing how cultural and organizational processes contribute to gender disparities in education.

🌟 Engaging discussions about the effects of individualistic value systems on gender in education await you!
