Hailing from the Bronx, Samara Joy's journey into music began in her church’s gospel choir, influenced by her rich musical heritage. With a background that includes her grandparents' gospel group and her father Antonio McLendon’s musical contributions, she blossomed into a jazz star during her college years at SUNY Purchase.

In 2019, she won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, showcasing her remarkable talent and earning a place in the jazz spotlight. Her debut album, released in 2021, marked her entry into the music scene, but it was her follow-up album, Linger Awhile, that won her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album and a headline-making win as Best New Artist.

With her latest work, Portrait, co-produced with Grammy winner Brian Lynch, she has solidified her position as a leading voice in jazz, showcasing her skills as a lyricist and earning acclaim for her arrangements blending jazz greats such as Charles Mingus and Sun Ra.
