About the event

Join us for a unique celebration of Earth Day aboard the historic 1885 tall ship Wavertree at the South Street Seaport Museum! 🌍 This special event features a screening of filmmaker Jon Bowermaster's acclaimed documentary, The Keeper, showcasing the impactful life and legacy of John Lipscomb, who dedicated 25 years to patrolling the Hudson River.

🛶 What to Expect:
The Keeper depicts Lipscomb's adventures, during which he traveled over 80,000 miles by wooden boat to protect “America’s First River.” Discover the Hudson's complicated history, once a vital natural resource and later a dumping ground, facing numerous environmental challenges. Lipscomb emerges as an advocate, confronting pollution and celebrating significant victories along the way.

This film not only explores the Hudson's environmental history but also highlights the efforts of over 300 keepers around the world working tirelessly to preserve waterways. It's a powerful narrative of resilience and activism in our ongoing quest to safeguard our natural resources.

📽️ Following the screening, engage in a Q&A session with Jon Bowermaster himself and wrap up the evening with a delightful reception featuring wine and seltzer! 🍷

About Jon Bowermaster

Jon Bowermaster is a renowned writer, filmmaker, and adventurer, recognized as a six-time grantee of the National Geographic Expeditions Council. As one of the Society's 'Ocean Heroes,' Jon's first National Geographic assignment immortalized a 221-day dog-sled expedition across Antarctica. He is also the founder of Oceans 8 Films and the One Ocean Media Foundation, focusing on climate-related films around the globe.

Experience the Wavertree

The Wavertree is a historic marvel, built in 1885 in Southampton, England. After a remarkable maritime journey, it now stands as the last remaining iron-hulled three-masted full-rigged cargo ship and is an emblem of New York City’s rich maritime history. Having been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it plays a pivotal role in telling the story of New York’s transformation into a modern metropolis.

Explore More at the Museum

Note that access to the historic ships and exhibitions isn’t included with your film ticket. To dive deeper into history, consider getting General Admission tickets upon your arrival. These tickets provide access to all ongoing exhibitions and the iconic tall ship Wavertree.
