About the event

Join us at the South Street Seaport Museum for an enlightening exhibition titled The Women of Coenties Slip: Art, Connection, and Place! Step into the dynamic artistic scene of Coenties Slip, where we will premiere three powerful short documentaries celebrating the extraordinary contributions of pioneering women artists Agnes Martin, Lenore Tawney, and Chryssa.

📍 Location: 213 Water Street
🎟️ Free Admission: We encourage you to register in advance for this not-to-be-missed event! Book your free tickets here!

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Coenties Slip transformed from a tranquil part of Lower Manhattan into a thriving hub of artistic experimentation. Artists rented out former maritime warehouses for as little as $45 a month, fostering a vibrant community characterized by stunning waterfront views and shared resources. Despite the lack of modern amenities, these spaces provided the perfect environment for creativity and collaboration, reshaping the landscape of American art.

During this immersive program, we will explore how Agnes Martin, Lenore Tawney, and Chryssa contributed to and were influenced by this unique creative community. Discover Martin, the iconic proto-minimalist painter known as the "earth mother" of the group; Tawney, who worked in a sunlit loft filled with looms; and Chryssa, a Greek-born artist who, although not a resident, was deeply entwined in its creative network.

The event will feature insightful discussions with leading scholars following each documentary screening. Engage with experts such as Kalliopi Minioudaki, contributor to Chryssa & New York; Prudence Peiffer, author of The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever; and Kathleen Nugent Mangan, Director of the Lenore G. Tawney Foundation.
