About the event

Have you ever found yourself crafting subtitles, only to realize that crucial information—like cultural references or sound cues—is lost in translation? If this resonates with you, this workshop is tailored for you!

In the audiovisual realm, meaning transcends mere dialogue; it involves an intricate interplay of images, sounds, performances, editing, and text. The industry often takes a simplistic approach by assuming that translating speech is sufficient, overlooking the visual and aural cues that are embedded within our cultures and significantly impact viewer comprehension and engagement. Ignoring these elements can lead to a compromised audience experience.

Join us to dive into cutting-edge research and principles of Enhanced Subtitling, incorporating accessibility, strategic placement, and thoughtful design into your workflows.

During this workshop, using a case study on the film Clear Shadows (2022), you'll discover how to:

  • Translate culturally specific visual and audio elements responsibly
  • Align subtitle placement and design with the film's aesthetic
  • Maintain the original audience's viewing patterns

The best part? You'll learn to implement these innovative techniques using standard subtitling software—no fancy editing tools required!

Research from the University of Leeds indicates that employing Enhanced Subtitling can significantly elevate audience enjoyment and understanding, provided it is applied with a professional touch. For seasoned subtitlers, this approach not only enhances skillset but also clearly distinguishes human expertise from automated subtitling systems.

Expand your toolkit, elevate your professional profile, and help shape the future of subtitling practice by joining us!

About the Speaker:

This workshop will be led by Sara Ramos Pinto, an associate professor in translation studies at the University of Leeds with extensive academic and professional experience. Sara serves as the Vice-President of the European Society for Translation Studies and is involved in numerous initiatives, including:

  • Associate Editor of Target: International Journal of Translation Studies
  • Co-lead of the Subtitling Audiences Network
  • Co-editor of the Translation, Interpreting and Mediation series at Leuven University Press
  • Co-organizer of the webinar series Don’t Captionise Me!, aiming to unite professionals and academics in the field.

Her research focuses on how viewers interpret audiovisual content and the essential role subtitling plays in shaping their experiences. Collaborating with industry film professionals, the Enhanced Subtitling practice is a product of an action research project involving the film director Fernando Vendrell and his 2022 work, Sombras Brancas [Clear Shadows].

🎟️ This webinar is FREE for SUBTLE members and £15 for non-members. After the event, recordings will be available for all SUBTLE members and shared with registered non-members!

Note: Ticket sales conclude at 23:59 GMT on April 12th.
