A Rare Planet: A Workshop and a Talk About Earth

Join us for a unique session that combines the Planetary Boundaries Fresco workshop with an insightful talk by astronomer Thilina Heenatigala on what makes Earth so special in the universe.

🌏 The Planetary Boundaries Fresco

In small groups, participants will use illustrated cards to map the nine Earth system processes essential for life, including climate, biodiversity, freshwater cycles, and ocean chemistry. This collaborative effort aims to foster a shared understanding of what keeps our planet habitable and the limits of human activity.

Developed by 1er degré, a French non-profit, this workshop is based on research from the Stockholm Resilience Centre and has been conducted with various organizations, including the European Space Agency.

🌌 Talk: Could There Be Another Earth?

Following the workshop, Thilina Heenatigala will discuss the search for living worlds and how it reshapes our understanding of Earth as the only known planet harboring life.

About Dr. Thilina Heenatigala:
An astronomer and science communicator based in Tokyo, he is an Assistant Professor at the Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI) and a Research Affiliate at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. His research focuses on the intersection of astrobiology and society.
