Cotton candy is not just a delightful treat; it's a fascinating exploration of chemistry! Discover how sucrose (sugar) transforms into the fluffy confection we all love. Here’s how it works:
- Sucrose (comprised of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen) is heated to its melting point, breaking molecular bonds to create liquefied sugar.
- As it melts, hydrogen and oxygen atoms rearrange into water molecules, which quickly evaporate, leaving carbon behind.
- The carbon ignites, and the sugar caramelizes.
As the sugar caramelizes, the machine spins at an astonishing 3,400 revolutions per second! When the hot liquid sugar hits the cool air, thousands of filaments form, resulting in the delicate treat we enjoy. This program is perfect for chemists of all ages—and yes, it tastes great too! 🍭
