Held on what would have been Dr. King's 89th birthday, this special evening honors the Detroit native and visionary founder of New Federal Theatre. His groundbreaking career transformed American theatre by showcasing Black playwrights, cultivating audiences, and creating opportunities for countless artists.

His influence shaped the artistic journeys of acclaimed performers like Denzel Washington, Chadwick Boseman, Samuel L. Jackson, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Debbie Allen, and many more. Dr. King's unwavering support of playwrights such as Ntozake Shange, Ron Milner, and Bill Harris brought powerful Black stories to audiences around the globe. 🌍

More than just a tribute, Defending the Light celebrates Dr. King’s enduring legacy of mentorship, artistic excellence, scholarship, and Black storytelling. The evening will feature performances from landmark works by playwrights he championed, inspiring tributes, archival exhibits, and a vibrant conversation about the future of Black theatre.
