Made Here: A Juneteenth Celebration by Malaika Collective
On June 20, Malaika Collective is bringing Made Here to Little West 12th Street in the Meatpacking District. Seven hours of music, art, conversation, and community on Juneteenth, in partnership with the Meatpacking District BID as part of their Summer Goals Open Streets series.
The location holds history. In the early 1900s, Black New Yorkers called Little West 12th Street “the old negroes’ causeway.” It was a gathering place, a meeting ground, a corner of the city where Black families built community. We’re returning to that street with intention.
Made Here is built on the West African, Akan principle of “Sankofa”: to look back to move forward. A day to gather, create, document, and celebrate where we’ve been and where we’re going.
What to Expect
∙ A portrait station capturing the day in real time
∙ A community memory wall
∙ Live art and creative workshops*∙ A wellness session with breathwork and movement*
∙ Rotating DJ sets playing very Black American tunes (we’re respecting the holiday over here!)∙ Card games, board games, and a community exchange
∙ Featured Black-led organizations and community partners
∙ Hosts guiding the day’s flow
