PhD Defence for Grace Turtle: Queering AI x Designing for co-predictive relations
Abstract ✨
Join us for Grace Turtle's PhD Defence, exploring the intersection of AI and queer design practices! This research delves into how predictive AI shapes our social fabric while marginalizing diverse experiences. Grace presents a visionary approach to rethinking AI through three innovative projects:
- Mutant in the Mirror: Using a Generative Adversarial Network (StyleGAN), this project challenges fixed categories by generating self-portraits that embody AI as a nonbinary entity.
- Undoing Gracia: Here, autobiographical data fosters interaction with a digital twin, illustrating how plural identities can emerge in algorithmic spaces.
- Sounding Territories: This initiative embraces dis/identificatory codings through sound, promoting embodied relationships and resisting algorithmic constraints.
Grace's journey emphasizes the necessity of queering AI: shifting the focus from identity alone toward the transformative possibilities in designing co-predictive relations. This work promises valuable insights for designers and scholars aiming to cultivate unpredictability and queer futures in technology, contributing profoundly to fields like Human Computer Interaction and Society and Technology Studies.
To everyone who has supported this journey through care and collaboration—thank you! 🤝 Your contributions make a difference in shaping our collective future.
