Shyampukur is even older than the city it resides in. Long before the Seths and Basaks established their yarn market, this area was a scrub jungle dotted with ditches and tanks. As late as 1837, the Samachar Darpan even reported a tiger sighting here!
What has taken its place is a vibrant tapestry of Bengali public life. Highlights include:

The etymology of Shyampukur is a matter of debate — some attribute it to Shyam Basak's tank, others to the family deity Shyam Rai, or to a Brahmin named Shyamcharan Mukhopadhyay. Join us as we explore these intriguing claims!
