The Schoolhouse presents: The Seashell and the Clergyman

Join us for a screening of Germaine Dulac’s The Seashell and the Clergyman (1928) — a surreal cinematic experience based on a scenario by Antonin Artaud. This captivating film presents a fragmented narrative of sexual and ecclesiastical obsession, as a clergyman's obsession with a beautiful woman, the wife of a military general, unfolds through a mesmerizing journey of long corridors, crystalline vistas, and narrow city streets.

As the clergyman grapples with his fury towards the general and his own erotic struggles, grotesque visions emerge — witness the transformation of the woman's breasts into a carapace of seashells and her tongue extending "out to infinity."

Despite being overshadowed by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí’s Un Chien Andalou (1929), critics argue that the iconic surrealist techniques we recognize today were pioneered in Dulac’s earlier work, ultimately immersing the viewer in an unpredictable visual landscape.
