The Tempest

The Mad and Merry Men present Shakespeare's The Tempest as a summer picnic spectacle on Štvanice Island.

This July, Prague audiences are invited to pack a blanket, gather friends and family, and journey into a world of magic, music, and mystery as the Mad and Merry Men present William Shakespeare's The Tempest in a spectacular open-air production on Štvanice Island on July 17 and 18.

Under the direction of Gordon L. Schmitz, the company has become known for ambitious and imaginative productions that breathe new life into classic stories. Following acclaimed stagings of Baron Münchhausen Between the Stars, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, A Clockwork Orange, and Murder on the Orient Express, the ensemble now turns its creative energy toward Shakespeare's final masterpiece.

Set on a remote island where spirits roam, storms obey a magician's command, and old enemies are forced to confront the past, The Tempest is a tale of wonder, reconciliation, and transformation. Combining Shakespeare's rich language with live music, dynamic ensemble performance, and striking visual storytelling, this production promises an unforgettable midsummer evening in one of Prague's most distinctive outdoor locations.

Audiences familiar with Baron Münchhausen Between the Stars will recognize the creative flair of the artistic team behind that celebrated production. The costumes and scenic design are once again crafted by the artists who helped bring Münchhausen's fantastical world to life, creating a visually captivating island realm where magic feels entirely possible. Complementing the action is a live musical score that draws inspiration from medieval traditions, lending the performance a timeless and enchanting atmosphere.

Designed as a relaxed picnic theatre experience, the event invites spectators to bring their own blankets and settle into the natural surroundings of Štvanice Island as the story unfolds beneath the open sky. Refreshments will be available for purchase on site.

Featuring some of Prague's finest actors, The Tempest continues the Mad and Merry Men's tradition of creating theatrical events that are imaginative, accessible, and deeply engaging.
