🗣️ This presentation delves into "Thompson's Pennsylvania Rifle Battalion of 1775," the first battalion of the Continental Army. Colonel Bonin will explore the backdrop and the critical role that these riflemen played during the early stages of the American Revolution.
After notable events such as the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the New England Colonies united to oppose British forces. Facing challenges of discipline and supply shortages, Congress took action on June 14, 1775, to bolster the fledgling army, and initiated the call for expert riflemen from Pennsylvania and neighboring colonies. With an enthusiastic response from the Pennsylvania frontier, what began as six companies quickly expanded to eight.
William Thompson, from Carlisle, led the battalion as Colonel, supported by Lieutenant Colonel Edward Hand and Major Robert MaGraw. This lecture will highlight the evolution of this pivotal group of soldiers, whose contributions helped shape America's fight for independence.
