Waka Tūpāpaku Weaving workshop
Join us for an immersive weekend at the KareNZ Kitz Harakeke Art and Craft Studio in Waitara, Taranaki, where we will craft a waka tūpāpaku! 🛶
Limited to 15 participants
Get ready to weave as we explore ngā tikanga o te harakeke (the traditions of the flax) while preparing the whenu (weaving strips). The harakeke will be pre-harvested and partially prepared for your convenience.
Schedule:
- Friday 5 pm: Gather for Whanaungatanga. Please bring a shared kai (food). Tea, coffee, and refreshments will be provided. ☕️
- Saturday 9 am: Begin with a Karakia (blessing) followed by weaving. Everyone is encouraged to participate in every part of the process, taking breaks as needed. Tables will be set up for weaving. ✂️
- Sunday 9 am: Conclude with Poroporoake (reflections) and bless the waka. A Q&A session will follow, wrapping up around 11 am.
Cost: $200 per person. Please note: no refunds or credits are available for missed workshops; however, you may send someone in your place or attend a later workshop.
The crafted waka will be available for purchase at $2,000 (includes a manuka shroud carrier) or $1,000 (just the waka).
