Where I’m From, There Are Parrots: Rethinking our relationships to borderlands and ‘problematic’ species
Gabriela Eseverri, an environmental writer, will be reading one of her essays, “Where I’m From, There Are Parrots,” and doing a short presentation on questions guiding her writing on immigration and belonging. She has spent almost two months here in sunny Singapore and would like to offer reflections from her experience.
Gabriela grew up in Miami and feels most at home when listening to parrots squawking overhead (her spark bird: the blue-and-yellow macaw). She loves exploring the ecological, cultural, and historical ecosystems that shape a place. Her writing is currently focused on stories of invasive species, immigration, and belonging in borderlands.
