Martyna Basta: From Noise to Resonance + Jon Heilbron & Rebecca Lane
For the art residency project at A4, Martyna Basta turns her attention to Bratislava’s urban and ecological soundscapes, using field recording as both source material and a way of listening. She will gather sounds from riversides, public spaces, and the city’s edges – places where natural, social, and industrial environments overlap. These recordings will be reshaped into a new body of work built entirely from recorded sound, where rhythm, melody, and harmony emerge from the material itself. A crackle, a hum, or a distant call can become the foundation of a composition, treating the environment as a complete instrument.
Another concert of the evening will a rare evening-length simultaneous performance of Jakob Ullmann’s Solo I and Solo IV. In Ullmann’s music, subtle gradations of sound and noise are located on the periphery of perception. His complex, palimpsest-like scores, played softly, encourage delicate and inward-looking performances which draw on subtlety and fragility. “For me, it is a central point in my work that the performer and the listener are both free to play and hear the music without backgrounds, environments, or other ideas outside of music […]“ (Jakob Ullmann)
Alongside this, she will lead a workshop focused on field recording as a creative practice. Participants will work with their own recordings, exploring techniques like granular synthesis and sound transformation, and finding new musical possibilities within everyday sound.
The workshop will take place on April 19, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at A4 – Space for Contemporary Culture. Admission is based on donation, the recommended donation is 5 €.
