Mikrozvuk #60: Gosheven + Johana Klára Kratochvílová

In April, LOM space will host a concert from the Mikrozvuk series, featuring Gosheven and Johana Klára Kratochvílová.

Gosheven is the solo project of Hungarian guitarist and sound artist Bálint Szabó. His work has resonated far beyond the local scene. His unique approach to electric guitar tuning systems was most evident on the visionary albums Leaper (Opal Tapes), which in 2017 was ranked among the best albums in The Wire as well as in many other international magazines, and Bivaq (2018, Opal Tapes). On these albums, he built upon the formal experiments of minimalists La Monte Young and Terry Riley. He has also brought this approach to groups such as 12z and Decolonize Your Mind Society, with whom he has performed multiple times at Bratislava’s T3 and A4 venues, as well as at the Next festival. Bálint also creates 3D-printed microtonal flutes.

Johana Klára Kratochvílová is a cimbalom player—a musical instrument typically associated with traditional folk festivals, particularly those in Moravia. Johana, however, approaches it from a completely different perspective. In her solo work, she electronically processes the instrument, liberating it from its traditional context and sound, and shifting it toward more abstract realms. A few years ago, she outlined this approach in the sibling duo Thyme, with whom she performed at various venues focused on experimental music. In addition to playing in orchestras and studying at JAMU, she also finds time to devote to her own work, which she will now present at LOM space.
