About the event

🌍 An Evening with Naomi Oreskes: Unpacking Climate Change and Progress

We are thrilled to welcome Naomi Oreskes, a globally recognized scholar and influential figure in climate science, to Stockholm for a thought-provoking event at ABF-huset. She is the bestselling author behind impactful works such as The Merchants of Doubt and The Big Myth.

In her latest publication, The Big Myth, Oreskes illustrates how entrenched business interests in America have fostered a deep-seated belief in free markets that often stands in the way of necessary environmental and labor regulations. Her earlier work, Merchants of Doubt, uncovered how corporate lobbying has successfully cast doubt on climate science, employing strategies reminiscent of those used by the tobacco industry.

During her talk, Naomi Oreskes will unveil new research which elucidates how the scientific understanding of climate change challenges the longstanding belief in unending progress that underpins Western institutions. She will also explore how narratives focused on technology and futurism can distract from the real power dynamics that hinder urgent climate action.

About Naomi Oreskes:
She serves as the Henry Charles Lea Professor of the History of Science and is also an Affiliated Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard University. Renowned for her examination of the interplay between science and society, Oreskes is a prominent voice on the repercussions of human-induced climate change and the politics of misinformation.

🎟️ Tickets include food and drinks during a mingle following the talk. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit ABF's initiatives that champion lifelong learning, democracy, and equality.

This event is part of the enlightening Changing Earth series, dedicated to bringing leading voices to Stockholm to discuss the ways in which human societies are reshaping the Earth System and what it signifies for our shared future. This series is a collaborative effort by the Centre for Anthropocene History and the Environmental Humanities Laboratory at KTH Royal Institute for Technology, alongside ABF Stockholm and Arena Idé.
