On The Edge: A Lecture on Mark Rothko

Join Adam Greenhalgh, associate curator at the National Gallery of Art, for an insightful exploration of the works of Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an influential abstract expressionist artist. 🎨

This lecture will delve into both celebrated and lesser-known paintings and drawings, including an untitled 1958 piece from the National Gallery's collection, featured in the Anchorage Museum's exhibition Cold War to the Cosmos. 🌌

Greenhalgh will discuss how Rothko's early figurative works from the 1930s and his mythical themes of the 1940s reflect the geopolitical anxieties of their time. These foundational pieces set the stage for his renowned abstract works of the 1950s and 1960s, which grappled with the universal tragic nature of human experience amid the threats of war and persecution.

About the Speaker

Adam Greenhalgh has been the lead author of the catalogue raisonné Mark Rothko: The Works on Paper since January 2015. He recently curated Mark Rothko: Paintings on Paper, which opened at the National Gallery in November 2023. Adam has also curated various exhibitions and published extensively on American art.
