Robert Schumann: Missa sacra, op. 147, for soloists, mixed choir and organ
This year marks the 170th anniversary of the death of the renowned German composer and music critic Robert Schumann. His work is dominated mainly by piano compositions, but he also composed orchestral and choral music.
Missa sacra was written in 1852 at the end of the composer's life. This deeply moving romantic composition, characterized by expressive harmonies, precise use of counterpoint, and concise themes, is one of the great masterpieces of 19th-century sacred music.
After its performance in 1861, Clara Schumann wrote to Johannes Brahms: "The Kyrie is deeply moving, as if cast from a single mold; in the Sanctus the individual movements had such a wonderful sound effect that I felt a chill run down my spine."
