Om evenemanget
Join us at the Rock Art of North Africa exhibition, a captivating showcase dedicated to the stunning rock engravings and paintings found in the Eastern Sahara. This permanent exhibition has been made possible through extensive research conducted by the Archaeological Museum in Poznań across Algeria, Egypt, and Sudan.
The remarkable work initiated by the late Prof. Lech Krzyżaniak began at the awe-inspiring site of Tassili n'Ajjer in Algeria, known for housing some of the largest collections of rock paintings in Africa and worldwide. Some of these ancient images are believed to be over 10,000 years old, while others were created in modern times.
In addition, the ongoing research in the Dakhleh Oasis in Egypt continues to unearth prehistoric engravings as well as Dynastic and later Arabic artwork. Notably, the Neolithic representations of women, thought to symbolize fertility, are a unique addition to Saharan art.
The exhibition also highlights findings from the 4th Nile Cataract in Sudan, where recent discoveries of petroglyphs have provided further insight into pastoral life in ancient times, estimated to date back to the 4th and 3rd millennia BC.
Thanks to collaboration with several scholarly institutions, visitors will have the chance to explore a variety of objects including multimedia installations designed for both adults and children. Young explorers can even engage with a boulder adorned with animal engravings, allowing them to replicate the images using carbon paper and graphite, immersing themselves in the world of rock art research.
