7650: Misunderstanding Light - Opening night
Join us for an enchanting evening celebrating the unique beauty of early mobile photography! 📸✨
Photography 2002 - 2025
In 2002, the Nokia 7650 emerged as the first camera phone in Europe, featuring a modest 0.3-megapixel (480 × 640) VGA camera. With just 3.6 MB of user memory, you could capture only 50 – 70 images in its default setup. Although it lacked zoom and exposure control, this extraordinary device birthed a distinctive aesthetic.
The images produced by the 7650, rich in their imperfections, dissolve into visuals reminiscent of oil paintings rather than mere snapshots. They misinterpret light, shadow, and the beauty of nature, uncovering unexpected poetry within those errors. Today, many of these devices show signs of wear, with scratched screens that leave photographers questioning the camera's view.
This captivating exhibition, curated by Sebastian Büttrich alongside unnamed friends, showcases a collection of 7650 photographs taken from 2002 to 2025, each image captured with the original phone—save for a new battery. 🌅
