Beyond Slop
🔍 Why can you feel an artist's voice in an oil painting but not a prompt?
Every AI tool invites you to input your desires, yet profound creativity isn't merely handed back; it emerges through process: the beauty of iteration, accident, and surprise. 🎨
In a world of slop, we've lost sight of dreaming bigger. New technologies should foster mediums that enable truly novel expressions. Something has gone amiss, and it stems from the ideologies behind the technology.
Drawing on seven years of crafting creative AI tools, I'll explore where the prevalent paradigm has faltered and sketch out humane, process-oriented alternatives.
Then, I'll engage in a dialogue with leading artist Feileacan Kirkbride McCormick, as we delve into how he creates a unique medium and voice while navigating these innovative technologies.
Joel Simon is an artist, toolmaker, and researcher focused on creative AI. He is the creator of Artbreeder, one of the pioneering collaborative AI art platforms, and runs Morphogen, a studio dedicated to designing expressive creative tools. His work investigates biology and emergence as interfaces for creativity.
Feileacan Kirkbride McCormick is an artist examining information's role—not just as data, but as computation, language, and systemic structures. As part of the artistic duo Entangled Others, alongside artist Sofia Crespo, he furthers artistic research while extending discussions on complex systems into the realm of emergent phenomena.
