BODY OF WORK 5: FUTURISM NOW 🌌

Early Futurism celebrated the raw velocity of industrial machinery. Over the past century, this trajectory has shifted inward, influenced by pioneering cybernetic theorists like Norbert Wiener and visualized by Syd Mead. Visionaries such as Philip K. Dick and William Gibson, along with the post-human philosophy of Donna Haraway, foresaw a world where human consciousness, screen technology, and synthetic environments would inevitably merge.

Cultural theorists like Mark Fisher, Legacy Russell’s Glitch Feminism, and Octavia Butler’s speculative worlds expanded this vision, revealing technology not as neutral engineering but as a battleground for identity, perception, and spatial agency.

In 2026, we are no longer speculating on that horizon; we are living within it. Surrounded by synthetic intelligence, neural architectures, robotics, and hyper-globalization, the frontier has shifted from mechanical hardware to synthetic consciousness and digital perception.

Presented as part of Berlin New Media Week (2 - 6 September), Body of Work 5 at Studio1111 reclaims this movement for today’s creative class: digital artists, visualists, sound designers, and frontier soft+hardware advancements driving contemporary culture at the intersection of media art and innovation.

Moving beyond nostalgic tropes, Body of Work 5 transforms the studio space into an active canvas, examining how real-time design, generative art, spatial installations, and visual media disrupt automated perception.

Through talks, visual showcases, and live audiovisual performances, the event probes where computational systems end and human awareness begins, carving out new ways to feel, resist, and construct meaning within our current reality.

As William Gibson famously observed:

"The future is already here - it’s just not very evenly distributed."

FUTURISM NOW asks:
When the future is no longer a distant horizon but our immediate environment, how do we actively shape the perception of what comes next?
