Background

With three-quarters of the globe's population in fossil fuel-importing economies, transitioning to clean generation, storage, and electrification is a vital pathway to achieving energy security. Since 2021, global renewable energy (RE) capacity has more than doubled, with battery storage increasing nearly tenfold. However, developing economies (excluding China) have attracted only one-fifth of clean energy investment.

The next decade will focus on innovative market-led solutions involving competitive auctions, new financial products, distributed RE business models, and smart grids. Notably, India, the world's third-largest RE market, has implemented compelling strategies from demand aggregation to enhanced wholesale power markets. Internationally, the UK's Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme and Australia's home battery programs showcase effective mechanisms that can rapidly scale clean energy. To truly hyperscale RE, a coordinated evolution across markets, grids, and financial flows is essential both domestically and internationally.
