Java Debugger in the Hands of AI

Most developers have attempted to delegate bug fixing to AI agents, but often end up in a frustrating loop involving debug prints, recompilation, and lengthy waits. Why make AI work in the dark when it can have full access to the same resources a developer has in an IDE?
In this talk, we will showcase mcp-jdwp-java—an open-source Model Context Protocol (MCP) server implementation that empowers LLM agents with direct Java debugger access. This integration revolutionizes the debugging process, enabling agents to systematically assess the JVM state, establish breakpoints, and evaluate expressions in real-time.

With over 25 years of Java programming experience, Honza is involved in open-source projects like evitaDB and is a pivotal member of the Czech programming community, co-organizing the jOpenSpace unconference and lecturing at JavaDays.

Will Java Survive the Age of AI Project Builders?

Over the last six months, three side projects had AI agents involved, with only the first utilizing Java and Spring. In this presentation, I’ll cut through the industry jargon surrounding agentic development, share genuine insights from my experiences with tools like Claude and OpenClaw, and discuss the reasons Java is no longer my primary choice for new endeavors, alongside what must change for it to reclaim that status.
