Other Steps, Another Time: Garland Native American Awareness Day

Join us for a meaningful exploration of Native American culture at Garland Native American Awareness Day! 🌟 On Saturday, March 7, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the historic Plaza Theatre at 521 W State St, Garland, TX 75040 will host a series of engaging activities aimed at celebrating the rich heritage of our area's first residents.

Event Highlights:

  • 🎬 Screening of two feature-length films:
    • Te Ata - the inspirational story of Mary Thompson Fisher, a pioneer Native American performer and advocate.
    • Montford: Chickasaw Rancher - highlighting the challenges faced by Montford Johnson in establishing his ranching legacy.
  • 🎤 Keynote address by Joe Thomas, a leading authority on the Removal and Native American Heritage.
  • 🕺 Dance and art demonstrations, along with displays of artifacts and enriching exhibits.
  • 🎭 An original dramatic presentation showcasing one family's experience during the Removal in the early 1800s.

This free program is intended for everyone to learn about the indigenous cultures that have shaped North Texas. Additional speakers include:

  • Derek Ross, Baylor University's indigenous scholar-in-residence, focusing on the Wichita affiliated tribes.
  • Ricky Reyes, a member of the Jumanos tribe of Texas.
