Paint Me a Road out of Here | Free State Festival

Über die Veranstaltung

Join us for a compelling narrative that intertwines art, activism, and the struggle for justice. 🌟 In 1971, the brilliant artist Faith Ringgold created the monumental painting For the Women’s House, intended for the women incarcerated at Rikers Island. Fast forward fifty years, and artist Mary Enoch Elizabeth Baxter, who experienced the system firsthand, teams up with a diverse group of activists, politicians, artists, corrections officers, and Faith Ringgold herself! Together, they aim to liberate the artwork and empower women affected by similar oppressive realities.

Paint Me a Road Out of Here unveils the painting's tumultuous journey and tells the stories of two women who, despite the passage of time, confront the same formidable institutions through their art and their unwavering aspirations. 🌈

Introduction by Susan Earle, Curator of European and American Art at the Spencer Museum of Art.
