Earth Day Virtual Talk, Paul Walde: Treescape Revolution
Join us for an enlightening virtual talk featuring Paul Walde, an interdisciplinary artist based in Victoria, Canada, where he teaches Visual Arts at the University of Victoria on lək̓ʷəŋən territory. For over 30 years, Walde has passionately engaged with critical environmental topics, such as global warming, deforestation, endangered species, and the interplay between these issues and the art world.
Originally trained as a painter, his journey into music and sound compositions has enriched his artistic expression for more than 25 years. He is particularly renowned for his interdisciplinary performance works that take place within natural settings, with documentation from these events often serving as the foundation for his acclaimed sound and video installations, showcased both nationally and internationally.
In this insightful talk, Walde will delve into his recent projects focusing on the primary forests of Vancouver Island and the challenges these vital ecosystems encounter. Notably, in 2025, he presented Forestorium, an opera that featured 8 soloists alongside an orchestra and chorus, all performed in the breathtaking backdrop of an old-growth forest on Ma’amtagila territory.
Walde will also explore Treescape Revolution No.1, a stunning photographic work that captures the entirety of an old-growth cedar tree, revealing its vast circumference of 36 feet. This work reflects on the complexity and significance of trees, suggesting that they represent ecosystems nested within ecosystems.
