That the people behind Berlin's DIY concert scene are themselves active musicians is not the exception, but the rule. They are all united by enthusiasm and the will to take matters into their own hands, to strengthen structures and shape culture, usually under very precarious conditions.
The concert series Frictive Frequencies now brings some of the mostly behind-the-scenes cultural activists in the field of improvised music in Berlin into the spotlight. Over the years, they have all developed remarkable forms of expression as artists, but have often taken a backseat to their work as organizers. Frictive Frequencies now makes the artistic side of the organizers visible, giving something back to this scene. The series sees itself not only as a forum for improvised music, but also as a place for communication and the exchange of ideas about DIY practices. The invited guests present their own unique sonic languages, and also share their experiences in artistic and organizational practice in short talks.

Eugenia Seriakov is a cultural worker, curator, researcher, performer, DJ and radio host with a scientific background in Visual and Media Anthropology and Popular Music Studies. Her improvised performances as Cate Hops unfold as electro-acoustic experimental sound pieces and ambient scapes. She works with objects, hacked toys, effected voice, and radios. Seriakov hosts collaborative events that expand thematically from sound system culture to improvised music.
Régis Lemberthe makes setups that build noise, ranging from sound sculptures, to live performance, or creative coding, with a focus on the live sonification of natural and mathematical phenomena. In 2015 Lemberthe started hosting experimental sound arts sessions at Noiseberg, Berlin. Since then, Noiseberg expanded to over 100 sessions and four festivals, hosting more than 500 artists from around the world.
Brazilian flutist and sound artist Marina Cyrino works in the fields of improvisation, composition, and performative audio-visual installations. Her flute playing is characterized by unique techniques that she has developed through the use of internal amplification. The rhythmic use of the flute and the extensive use of objects attached to the instrument are further characteristic elements of her playing. As a member of the Brazilian experimental production house Seminal Records Cyrino has been curating the Terminal Series of concerts around Berlin since 2023.
