Once a hub of innovation, General Electric (GE) dominated the area for much of the 20th century, employing a substantial portion of the local workforce at its peak in 1944. However, as GE's presence faded, the future of the 39-acre Broadway property sparked concerns among residents.

In 2017, a vision for revitalization emerged when an affiliate of Ancora Partners LLC acquired the property, transforming it into a mixed-use innovation district named Electric Works. This remarkable restoration has earned the prestigious 2025 Cook Cup for Outstanding Restoration from Indiana Landmarks.
