Dive into the critical insights of Killing Radicalism with Melinda Chen, an esteemed assistant professor from the University of Oklahoma’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies. 📚
In her groundbreaking book, Melinda explores the pressing question: "What does victim advocacy look like under governmental regulation?"
Victim advocates historically provided crucial support for survivors of sexual violence, but the current climate has shifted. Instead of operating within independent collectives, many advocates now work in government-funded rape crisis centers with stringent funding policies.
Melinda argues that these constraints can lead advocates away from challenging intersectional violence, which has particularly damaging effects on marginalized survivors. 😔
Through over 50 interviews with advocates and her own experiences, she sheds light on how neoliberalism impacts anti-rape advocacy today. From grant writing to data collection, everyday responsibilities can inadvertently diminish a victim's sense of worthiness—pushing them out of the post-rape process.
This presentation is a clarion call for advocates and scholars, urging a reevaluation of our approaches to anti-violence efforts and a revival of radical solidarity with marginalized movements. ✊
