In 1990, Nelson Mandela, upon his release from prison, recognized their inspirational impact and invited them to his Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in 1993, dubbing them “South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World.”

In the mid-1980s, their rich harmonies captivated American artist Paul Simon, leading to their collaboration on the iconic Graceland album, which played a significant role in bringing World music to the forefront.

After an illustrious career leading the group for over fifty years, Joseph Shabalala retired in 2014, passing the baton to his talented sons: Thulani, Sibongiseni, and Thamsanqa Shabalala.
