Hypnotic improvised music by two piano virtuosos.
They met each other at a jazz festival and spontaneously decided to start a duo: Greek composer and pianist Tania Giannouli and Swiss master improviser Nik Bärtsch. What they recognized in one another: a fearless spirit of adventure, an intuitive sense for robust musical architecture, and a keen ear for sonic beauty. Tonight, they make their Amsterdam debut at the Bimhuis with a set full of rhythmic drive and hypnotic lyricism.
Since their meeting in 2022, Bärtsch and Giannouli have made a strong impression as a duo on various international stages. Bärtsch, also known from his “zen-funk quartet” RONIN, draws from a wide range of sources—from James Brown and minimalism to Eastern martial arts and meditation. Giannouli received a classical education, but chooses to use all her technical and theoretical background for creation in the moment. Together, they craft music like a building with diverse rooms—rooms you’d want to live in.
