Om evenemanget
Discover the Uphagen House, a remarkable branch of the Gdansk Museum, showcasing Poland’s only 18th-century bourgeois residence and one of the rare examples in Europe that is open to the public. 🏛️
Acquired by Johann Uphagen in 1775, this historic tenement underwent extensive modernization until 1787 to meet the luxury desires of its wealthy owner. Uphagen lived here until his passing in 1802, keeping the house within his family throughout the 19th century—a true rarity of the time.
The house later transformed into a museum in 1911, operating until 1944, when its rich decor was evacuated by German conservators during the war. Both the house and the city suffered destruction in March 1945. However, the tradition of this museum was revitalized in 1998 with the opening of the Museum of Burgher Interiors. 🎨
Visitors can now explore the elegant residential areas and business spaces within the Uphagen House. Marvel at the beautifully decorated vestibule, the charming small merchant's shop, and the exquisite lounge adorned with painted Chinese themes dating back to the 18th century.
On the first floor, the drawing room serves as the house's most distinguished interior, boasting white panelling with ancient architecture depictions, luxurious fabrics above, and a stunning stucco ceiling. Don’t miss the impressive English ten-branched candlestick! 🕯️
The large dining room, overlooking the tranquil courtyard, features intricate paneling that tells mythological tales and showcases Roman elements.
In the side annex, find three cozy lounges decorated with charming representations of insects, flowers, and birds, one of which served as a music room. The second floor's former bedrooms now host temporary exhibitions, while the transverse annex features a quaint dining room furnished with pieces from the house's history.
Finally, explore the ground floor’s utility rooms, including the kitchen filled with historical kitchenware. Last entry is 45 minutes before closing.
