Om evenemanget

Join us for an engaging presentation by Kevin Olsen on Rails to Sterling Forest: The History of the Erie’s Greenwood Lake Division at the Greenwood Lake Library! 🌲🚂

Kevin, a passionate history buff, lifelong learner of the New Jersey Highlands, and dedicated model railroader, will delve into the captivating past of the region’s railroads. 📚✨

His talk will cover:

  • The early motivations behind constructing the line to service the Ringwood Iron Mines and the eastern shore of Greenwood Lake.
  • The impact of passenger services in transforming Greenwood Lake into a vibrant resort destination.

The New York & Greenwood Lake Railway (NYGL), established in the 1870s from earlier lines like the Montclair Railway (1867), played a crucial role in transporting iron ore, harvested ice, and vacationers. After its acquisition by the Erie Railroad in 1878, it became vital for connections from Jersey City to Sterling Forest.
